WV DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION OFFICE BUILDING

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) office building is in excess of 180,000 square feet.  Completed in 2005, the facility was designed and constructed to be a “Green Building” and has earned LEED recognition (silver level) for its efficiency by the U.S. Green Building Council.  RDS provided a web-based facility management network that included two (2) 72,000 CFM penthouse air handling systems, 512 variable volume air terminals, building lighting control, comprehensive carbon dioxide measurement system, and central hot water boiler system.  The ASI facility management network is a key component in earning the building LEED recognition through implementation of energy efficient control strategies.   According the WV DEP web-site: “The building runs off of minimum energy, a prerequisite for the LEED program.  Lights are only used when needed and the HVAC units run only while the building is occupied.  The agency is earning the most LEED points in the energy and atmosphere category.”

TAYLOR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

RDS provided a web-based facility management network for schools county-wide.  The K-12 education marketplace has focused increasingly on indoor air quality as a means to improve the learning environment.  Towards that goal, the ASI facility management network is utilized to control carbon dioxide levels and humidity levels to reduce the risk of mold growth.  The system can be accessed over the internet (with user name/password protection) allowing county maintenance staff to log on from their homes.  This allows the county to increase building efficiency by remotely initiating “snow days” whereby the HVAC systems can be placed in “setback” mode.  ASI Controls “Weblink” software allows the system to connect to any ethernet network and with permission of the owner, the internet as well.

THOMAS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

The healthcare industry has stringent environmental control requirements to promote the healing of patients and stop the spread of infection.  A HVAC system simply must be controlled precisely and reliably.  When Thomas Memorial Hospital built their new Medical Pavilion and Imaging Center, they selected RDS to provide the web-based facility management control system.  Everything from air handling units, humidifiers, VAV terminals, water-source heat pumps, steam-to-hot water heat exchangers, fluid coolers, and hot water reheat coils are directly controlled through an ASI facility management system.  Remote buildings, such as the Imaging Center, were placed on the hospital’s computer network and given an IP address, thereby giving the hospital’s maintenance staff access without the use of slow telephone modems.  An alarm reporting system is a key feature to the system that gives the maintenance staff early indication of problems usually before receiving complaints from occupants.

HUTTONSVILLE CORRECTIONAL CENTER

Huttonsville Correctional Center is a maximum security facility housing up to 1000 inmates.  When two new housing wings were added in 2006, a web-based facility management control system was installed by RDS.  Working in a maximum security facility is a challenge.  Construction means and methods focus on security and inmate protection.  All wiring and conduit must be concealed, zone sensors must be protected utilizing special locking mechanisms, and reliability is a must to limit the interaction of maintenance personnel and inmates in the housing wings.  At HCC, controls were installed for six (6) new roof-top HVAC units and two (2) steam-to-hot water heat exchangers.  A new computer workstation was installed in the maintenance office.
